Why are my Eavestrough not draining?
Slope - if there is not adequate slope on the Eavestrough, the water will not flow towards the downpipe.
Clean - if the Eavestrough are not cleaned every Spring and Fall they will fill with leaves and debris. This does not allow for the water to flow properly.
House has settled - often with older homes the dwelling has settled and this can change the slope of the Eavestough and not allow the water to drain properly. If the Eavestrough cannot be sloped any further, an additional downpipe may need to be installed.
Why are my Eavestrough leaking?
Seal - All Eavestrough corners and endcaps are sealed with Gutter Seal. Sometimes the sealant does not adhere properly in cold weather and may need to be re-sealed in the warmer weather.
Roof Edge - If the house does not have roof edge installed underneath the shingles (and the sheeting from the roof is not overlapping the Eavestrough), water will flow off the roof and leak in behind the Eavestrough.
Colder Temperatures – The Eavestrough can become full of ice when the water is not able to drain. This ice forming can be a result of fluctuations in the temperature (constant melting/freezing – such as Springtime). An option is to either remove the ice from the Eavestrough, or to wait until the ice has melted.
Why is there an ice dam on my roof?
When an attic is too warm in the winter, it melts rooftop snow, even when outdoor temperatures are below freezing. As this water runs down the warm shingles, it eventually hits the lower edge of the roof. Since there’s no heat underneath this location of the roof, the water will refreeze, forming the start of what’s called an ice dam. Having adequate ventilation in the roof can help to avoid an ice dam forming.
What is the difference between Vinyl Siding and Fibre Cement Siding?
Fibre cement siding is manufactured with inter-laminated bond strength, making it more durable than vinyl siding. Because of the durability this makes fibre cement a great choice for colder climates. Fibre cement is available in a range of styles and textures.
Vinyl siding has become the most popular choice in Canada due to cost, versatility, and easy maintenance. Vinyl siding is also environmentally friendly. An advantage to vinyl siding is there is no need to scrape or paint it, like other materials; just a wash is needed. Vinyl siding comes in many different colours as well.
Due to manufacturing costs fibre cement siding tends to cost more than that of vinyl siding.
What is the difference between fibreglass and organic shingles?
‘Organic’ is the term used to describe traditional asphalt shingles, which differentiates them from the more common alternative called fibreglass shingles. The two types of shingles look the same: coloured granules held together by hardened tar. Both types are flexible and both are applied in exactly the same way. The difference has to do with what the tar and gravel mixture is bonded to.
Organic shingles are built on a substrate of heavy felt, while fibreglass shingles have a foundation of non-woven glass fibres. This difference doesn't sound like much, but it actually leads to substantially different performance, especially in particular situations.
The main advantage of fibreglass shingles is their resistance to heat. They're much less likely to curl up than organic shingles, even when used on hot, unventilated roof structures. This means they will last longer, especially when you are using higher-end fibreglass shingle products. Fibreglass shingles tend to last much longer and carry a better warranty. They are also less susceptible to catching fire or melting from the heat of a fire below.
